Freezing green onions is a popular winter harvesting method. Read more about how to properly freeze a product, and what can be prepared from it.
Important! If you freeze chopped onions, cool it after slicing.
Is it possible to freeze green onions for the winter and keep it fresh
Onion freezing is permissible since greens retain all vitamins during this treatment. However, it will not retain its fresh appearance. Cooks say: after defrosting, the product will no longer be juicy and will lose the same “onion” taste. It is better not to use it in salads. Nevertheless, it is perfect for dishes with heat treatment - this is an ideal way to add vitamins in the winter.
How to prepare onions for freezing
Cooks freeze only pre-cooked foods. Cook the onion as follows:
- Select the best items. Feathers should be fresh, saturated green, without damage.
- Rinse the product under cool running water.
- Dry the greens naturally by placing them on a napkin or towel.
- Cool the feathers in the refrigerator until frozen.
Did you know? Onions destroys harmful bacteria, removes parasites from the body, soothes the nervous system and stimulates the secretion of gastric juice.
Preparing a refrigerator or freezer before freezing
Prepared products should be stored in a separate freezer or in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator. Before freezing them you need to prepare:
- Take out all the old bags.
- Set the camera to defrost mode.
- Wash the chamber after defrosting.
- Remove excess moisture from the walls and bottom.
How to freeze green onions at home
Mistresses freeze green onions in two forms: whole or chopped.
Did you know? Onions were introduced into the culture more than 5 thousand years ago.
In general form
For storage in its entirety, prepare a plastic bag or film. Freeze according to the following instructions:
- Place whole prepared feathers in a plastic bag or lay on a film.
- Wrap the packaging tightly without leaving any gaps.
- Compactly place all bags in the freezer.
Shredded in bags
Shredded green feathers are frozen in two forms: fresh and fried. Regardless of the choice of method, prepare plastic bags or containers on a zip lock.
Important! You can not freeze the onion repeatedly.
To freeze freshly chopped onions, proceed as follows:
- Cut feathers into pieces of the same size and cool.
- Pour the shredded product into the bag.
- Spread it evenly, flattening the filled bag.
- Press down the bag so that air comes out and tie it.

Fried chopped onions are prepared in a slightly different way:
- Chop greens.
- Pour the vegetable oil into the pan and place on the stove.
- When the oil warms up, reduce the heat and cover the greens.
- Fry the product, but not too much - with excessive heat treatment, vegetables do not tolerate freezing.
- Drain the oil through a sieve or colander.
- Put the greens in the bag.
- Release excess air from the packaging by squeezing it slightly.
- Place the bags in the freezer.
Frozen storage periods
Shelf life depends on temperature:
- frozen at -18 ...- 20 ° С the product will be stored for up to 6 months;
- stored at -8 ...- 10 ° C, greens can be consumed for a maximum of 3 months after freezing.
How to defrost and use onions
Culinary specialists call five main methods of defrosting:
- In room. Room temperature is usually +18 ... + 25 ° С. In such conditions, the product will quickly melt and will be suitable for cooking. Pre-place it in a bowl or plate so that excess water drains into the tank.
- In fridge. Put the bag in a deep plate and leave it in the refrigerator. The temperature will be lower than in the freezer, so the greens will begin to smoothly thaw. After 2–2.5 hours, the product can be used for cooking.
- In water. Pick up a bowl of water at room temperature and place a package of frozen food in it. When it becomes soft to the touch, remove the bag from the bowl. Now greens can be taken out of the packaging and cooked.
- In the microwave. Most modern microwave ovens are in defrost mode. Install the required program and leave the product to defrost for 5–10 minutes. If your microwave does not have these features, set the minimum heating output.
- When cooking. Heat greens directly in the pan if you plan to cook a fried or stewed dish. This method is suitable for a product that has been stored fried.
