Cucumbers are one of the most popular vegetables in our latitudes. To get the most out of their use, the best option is to grow them yourself to be sure of their safety. In this article we will tell you how to feed cucumbers with yeast so that they grow faster.
Why are cucumbers processed with yeast?
Each owner has his own tricks that help him increase his crop. The most popular way is still processing the cucumbers with yeast.
Did you know? International Cucumber Day is celebrated annually on July 27 in the city of Suzdal in the territory of the State Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve.
Why this procedure is carried out and what gives its use, we consider below:
- improves the microbiological composition of the soil, increases the production of nitrogen and phosphorus, which are so necessary for plant growth;
- the rooting of seedlings is accelerated, the growth rate increases, the total number of processes;
- plant resistance to external negative factors and diseases improves;
- fruiting duration increases;
- palatability of fruits improves;
- the volume of green mass increases.
How much and how often you can feed cucumbers with yeast
Many gardeners are interested in the scheme according to which it is necessary to fertilize cucumbers with yeast, and after how long it should be done.
The most common is the scheme according to which feeding is carried out 3 times per season:
- The first time fertilizers are applied a week after planting the seedlings or when the plant has a second true leaf.
- The second fertilizer is carried out when the plant has flowers. It was at this time that an additional portion of useful minerals would be very helpful.
- For the third time, top dressing is added if they want to extend the fruiting period. This should be done when the main fruiting period ends.
How to breed yeast for feeding cucumbers
For feeding, you can use both dry yeast and fresh. There is no difference in efficiency between them, unless you have to buy a fresh product in advance, and dry, given its long shelf life, there is always any owner.
From dry yeast
The most common are 3 recipes using dried yeast, which are very similar to each other. For the first recipe you need:
- Take 10 g of yeast and dilute them in a bucket of warm water with a capacity of 10 liters.
- Add 60 g of sugar, leave the mixture in a warm place for 2 hours.
- During this time, the yeast will come in contact with sugar and the fermentation process will begin.
- After this, the solution must be diluted in 50 liters of water.
- In the end, you get 60 liters of quality fertilizer for your cucumbers.
Important! During the preparation of the fertilizer, the water temperature should not be higher than +50 ... + 60 ° C, otherwise the yeast will die.
The second cooking recipe is as follows:
- Take 10 g of yeast and dilute them in 2.5 liters of warm water.
- Add 1⁄2 cup sugar, mix the ingredients until smooth.
- Cover the container with a towel, allow time to activate the yeast, stirring occasionally.
- After fermentation, dilute 1 cup of the mixture in 10 l of water.
- The resulting mixture can be immediately used to fertilize cucumbers.
The third recipe is characterized by the use of bread, for it you need:
- Take bread or bread crusts, 10 g of dried yeast and half a glass of sugar.
- Dissolve all this in 10 liters of warm water.
- Twice a day you need to mix the mixture.
- After a week of fermentation, the fertilizer is ready to use.
From fresh yeast
When using a fresh product, you must:
- Take 1 kg of fresh yeast and 5 liters of warm water.
- Mix the ingredients in a bucket.
- Cover with a towel, leave in a warm place, so that the fermentation process takes place more actively.
- After completion of this process, dilute the mixture with water in a proportion of 1:10.
How to properly feed cucumbers with yeast
Yeast top dressing of cucumbers will not cause any difficulties, however, when applying it, several nuances should be taken into account.
Depending on the place of landing
The process of fertilizing cucumbers that are grown in open ground and in the greenhouse has slight differences. We consider each case individually.
In the open ground
Cucumbers that are grown in the open ground have more opportunities to get additional nutrients, therefore they are not as demanding as top dressing as the greenhouse version. It is enough to fertilize them 2-3 times during the growing season.
Important! Cucumbers can be not only watered with yeast fertilizers, but they can also be sprayed with plant leaves. This will give the foliage a more saturated green color and protect the bushes from the invasion of parasites and harmful microorganisms.
It is worth doing on moist soil and in warm weather. Usually 10 l of the finished mixture is sufficient for fertilizing 1 m², but depending on the condition of the soil, this figure can be increased or decreased.
In the greenhouse
Growing cucumbers in greenhouses requires more time and resources, but the yield at the same time becomes higher. Artificial conditions contribute to the fact that plants quickly deplete the nutrient layer of the soil, because of which their growth begins to be inhibited.
In this case, yeast fertilizers play the role of a growth promoter and contribute to the rapid development of bushes. Given that the greenhouse is usually very warm, yeast works even more efficiently. Experienced gardeners are advised to feed cucumbers in the greenhouse every 3-4 weeks, in moist soil, at the rate of 10 liters of fertilizer for 4-6 plants.
Seedling treatment
For the best development of the root system of seedlings, it is necessary to place it in yeast dressing until the first roots begin to appear, thus, you will accelerate the development of the root system by 2-3 weeks. It should be remembered that for seedlings it is necessary to use less yeast solution than for already grown cucumbers: 250 ml for one plant.
Did you know? In Cyprus, locals use cucumbers for sweet preservation. They make fragrant jam.
Feeding cucumbers during flowering and fruiting
It is worth noting that it is in the flowering phase that the foundation of the future crop is laid and how fruitful the plants will be.
During flowering, yeast fertilizers are most often used to increase the number of ovaries. Since bees act as pollinators of cucumbers, the smell of fermentation is very attractive to them. Thus, they pollinate more inflorescences and, accordingly, increases the yield of cucumbers.
During fruiting, this type of fertilizer is used so that the fruits grow faster and are not hollow, moreover, due to such top dressing, the fruiting time increases significantly.
Useful Tips
Before you start using yeast top dressing on your site, it does not hurt to familiarize yourself with the recommendations of experienced gardeners:
- each time it is necessary to prepare a fresh yeast solution, it can not be left the next time, because it quickly loses its useful properties;
- this top dressing should be used together with wood ash or eggshell, since it depletes the reserves of calcium and sodium in the soil;
- you must choose a yeast with an earlier production date;
- during the fertilizer process, you must make sure that the soil is warm enough, as this significantly affects the result of the action of yeast.
The versatility of yeast fertilizer lies in the fact that it can be used or combined with any other fertilizer, without prejudice to plants and loss of fertilizing efficiency. This fertilizer is completely organic and significantly saves money to gardeners.
