Unique startup Protifarm from the Netherlands produces insect protein for human nutrition. With the new money, the founder wants to expand his farm in Ermelo, the Netherlands.
Protifarm also seeks to open a non-European market. Dutch development company Oost NL and the East Netherlands Development Agency supported a round of financing.
Protifarm breeds Buffalo worms. The company grows female worms and collects larvae to produce protein powder, which is suitable for energy bars or sports drinks.
The energy bar is an ideal snack for athletes, travelers and in other conditions where there is no possibility of a full meal.
The Dutch are suppliers of the Bug Foundation. A German startup produces protein burettes. Protifarm would like to increase the production area to 3 thousand m² and, therefore, could cover the daily protein requirement of 90 thousand people.
In 2018, German consumers first tried the Bug Foundation burger, in which the meat was replaced with an alternative buffalo worm product. The customers liked the unusual food, and they left enthusiastic reviews about it. People defined its taste as more interesting and called such a replacement meat quite suitable.
