The Irish grain cultivation group called on the country to take a number of “immediate steps” to protect the Irish tillage sector and ban the production of palm oil, GMO soy products, and GMO corn.
In their statement, grain producers indicate that only last year Ireland imported up to seven million tons of grain in one form or another and this figure will grow in accordance with current policies, which makes up 75% of all grain used in the country.
An Irish grain producer group warns that grain used in food production may have been treated with pesticides banned in Ireland and the EU until 30 years ago.To counter these fears and the rapid reduction of the soil cultivation area in Ireland, the group believes that Ireland should take a number of immediate steps to ban the use of GMO feed crops in the country.
This, according to grain producers, should be: a change in the law to ensure compliance with the ban; voluntary abandonment by Irish supermarkets; increase in sown area; convergence; and support for the ban from industry groups. In addition, the Irish Grain Growing Group called on dairy cooperatives and the meat industry in Ireland to support the proposal and “immediately insist on the ban” on the use of GMO products in livestock feed.
