Kherson security experts in phytosanitary issues sound the alarm: an unprecedented number of mouse voles has been recorded in the region.
“Nothing foreshadowed the troubles, when suddenly the mice took up arms against winter crops,” experts say. “The scale of the disaster is striking: on one hectare, you can count up to a thousand rodent pests!”
Of course, the appearance of mice before severe frosts is a common and familiar process. Only earlier, mice similarly attacked the Kherson region on average once every six years. Now the trend has changed: uninvited guests visit the wheat fields every three years.
“One can say with absolute probability that the increased raids are associated with climate change,” the scientists are convinced. “The fact is that the conditions for rodent pests are the best: sparing winters with infrequent frosts create excellent conditions for the active propagation of voles.”
The only salvation for farmers may be chemicals. Designed to control rodents. Farmers try to use only those substances that will not harm the ecology of the region, are aimed exclusively at the attack of rodents and will not cause the death of certain representatives of flora and fauna.
“Yes, such drugs are not cheap pleasure,” Kherson agrarians complain. “But you won’t do anything to protect the crop from major losses!”
