Canada predicts an increase in wheat yields and a decrease in canola yields for 2020–2021. The total wheat sown area will increase from 25.02 to 25.77 million acres. The production forecast is planned at 33.90 million tons, which will be about 1.5 million per year.
According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, farmers will sow more wheat and less rape in the upcoming 2020 growing season. Most of the increase in yield is expected from wheat, with a government agency forecasting production growth of 18 percent to 5.90 million tons.
Rapeseed oil contains a record amount of fatty acids: palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, eicosan, erucic. Canada leads global rapeseed production. In 2013, Canada collected 17.9 million tons of rapeseed, while in China only 14.4.
For rapeseed, sown area is projected to fall by two percent, to 20.51 million acres. The total production of rapeseed will tentatively remain at 18.50 million tons, which will be the lowest crop in six years. Final stocks of the canola crop will be reduced to 3.00 million tons by the end of 2020/21. Wheat reserves in 2020-2021 will grow to 6.50 million tons, which is comparable to the forecast of 5.85 million tons in 2019-2020.
The projected production of barley in the amount of 9.52 million tons will decrease by eight percent year on year, while the yield of oats will grow by five percent, to 4.38 million tons. The sown area of soy and corn in the country is expected to be slightly reduced this year, but the production of these two crops is projected to grow due to improved crop expectations. Agriculture in Canada estimates soybean production at 6.55 million tons and corn at 13.85 million tons.
The early forecast requires only minor adjustments in the balance of sowing and special crops, and the forecast for the production of peas and lentils will be relatively stable throughout the year.
