The Hungarian authorities are seriously concerned about the development of medicinal crop production in the country.
Wild grass harvesting is often the main source of income for people in underdeveloped areas. Now only 60–70% of production is mined.
About 20 thousand people are involved in 20-25 processing plants. Cultivation and further processing is carried out manually. Lack of labor and a reduction in production space led to a decrease in national exports from 20 thousand tons per year to several thousand.
Cultivation of grass in the domestic market also requires the introduction of advanced technologies. According to a HelloVidék survey, revenue from the collection and production of medicinal, spicy, aromatic and industrial plants is more than $ 30 million per year. According to the data for 2019, in Hungary there are 100-120 regularly used types of herbs.
Dr. Laszlo Kulchar, President of the National Chamber of Agriculture and Rural Development (NAK) noted that the government has developed a comprehensive project to improve crop production in the country until 2030.
For more than 200 years, the Zwak family has been producing the national drink “Unicum” based on more than 40 plant species. The tincture recipe is kept in strict confidence and is passed on from generation to generation.
The strategy includes a map of the problems of collection, cultivation and processing, as well as the possibility of solving them. The sector provides subsidies for production as measures to support and increase competitiveness. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture, as part of the Rural Development Program, has announced a tender for the cultivation of grass plantations worth more than three million US dollars.
