In the Kherson region, a competition for the best logo for the Kherson watermelon was announced. That is why, this name should become a protected geographical indication, like Roquefort cheese, champagne or cognac.
“Ukraine is marching to Europe, so our manufacturers need to develop depending on the market demand: quality, environmental friendliness and protection of their products.
To do this, we all need to learn from the leading European countries, whose farmers have various forms of protection: trademarks, brands, logos, geographical indications, etc., ”says Yury Palichev, executive secretary of the Association of Kherson Watermelon Producers.
Creating a logo is an important step towards the official registration of the geographical indication "Kherson watermelon", so it should reflect the uniqueness and quality of the Kherson berry.
Therefore, members of the public union "Association of Kherson watermelon producers", together with partners, announced a competition for the best logo for a berry. The jury consists of representatives of the Department of Agricultural Development, agricultural producers, representatives of local self-government, public organizations, specialists in culture and tourism.
Recall that in 2019 the Ministry of Agrarian Policy determined the top ten products for registration of geographical indications, among them - “Kherson Watermelon”.
The registration procedure is carried out by the European Union's project “Geographical Indications in Ukraine” with the assistance of the public association “Association of Kherson Watermelon Producers” and the Department of Agro-Industrial Development of KHOA.
Currently, only one watermelon in the EU has a registered geographical indication: Anguria Reggiana (Italy).
