And instead of champagne - sparkling wine. Domestic alcohol will be renamed according to EU standards.
No more cognac or champagne will be produced in Ukraine. And nowhere else in the world.
Not only the names of the drinks, but their technology itself is patented by France. Cognac - only in the region of New Aquitaine, namely in the city of Cognac and its environs, in the department of Charente. Even if the drink is made in the neighboring French region, it will not enter the international market under the brandy “brandy”, only brandy. The same applies to champagne, which is produced only in the Champagne region, all that is beyond its borders are sparkling wines. Even the mark “champagne method” is forbidden for wines not from Champagne, it is possible - “traditional method”. Therefore, many countries have their own names for sparkling wine. In Spain, champagne is called “Cava”, in Italy “Spumante”, and the French region of Burgundy calls it “Crémant”.
Ukrainian producers will have to be smart and come up with domestic names for sparkling wines. This is required by the agreement on a free trade zone between Ukraine and the EU countries. According to the CEO of Ukrvinprom Corporation, Vladimir Kucherenko, Ukrainian winemakers are ready for new labels, although they expect a likely drop in profits during the renaming process.
