North Korea, after the worst in a decade of harvest, reduced food rations to 300 grams per day, which is the lowest figure for this time of year, and probably not the limit, the United Nations said on Friday May 3.
The UN conducted a food assessment at the request of North Korea from March 29 to April 12. She was given wide access, including to cooperative farms, rural and urban households, kindergartens and food distribution centers.
"This new food safety assessment ... found that after the worst due to drought, heat and floods over 10 years of crops, 10.1 million people suffer from severe food shortages, which means they will not have enough food until the next harvest." - said the representative of the World Food Program Herve Verhoosel. The study found that protein intake in North Korea is very low, and some families consume protein only a few times a year. The UN report says that agricultural production in North Korea is 4.9 million tons, this is the lowest figure since 2008-2009, the shortage of food marketing in 2018/2019 amounted to 1.36 million tons.
The 10.1 million people in need of food assistance include 7.5 million of the 17.5 million North Koreans who are dependent on state diets and 2.6 million collective farmers. The UN World Food Program plans to conduct another assessment in July and August to fully understand the scale of the food crisis that hit North Korea.
